Field work? You mean Field PLAY!
Despite their flashy good looks, Field Spaniels are first and foremost a hunting dog. Many gundog breeds have suffered at the hands of show breeders (pre-60s Field Spaniels being no exception), and those breeds have paid the price by having their lines split into two what can be considered two different breeds, a show line and a working line.
Some of the rarer breeds have managed to escape this fate, Brittanies stand out in particular, aswell as Vizslas. Field Spaniels have also been fortunate enough to have remained one single line, and can be hunted in the field one day, and shown the next.

Field spaniels have excellent noses, and can find game even in the thickest of covers, a trait that also makes them great tracking dogs. They are fantastic swimmers who enjoy retreiving in the water very much. With this breed, a soft, firm handling approach is much more succesful then any harsh treatment.
